How the Shorty Awards Work:

The Shorty Awards are a worldwide effort to engage hundreds of thousands of Twitter users to identify the best people and organizations on Twitter.

Voting:

To vote, send a tweet like this: I nominate @TwitterUser for a Shorty Award in #category because... (add reason here).

You can also tweet shorter votes like this: #shortyawards @username #category (add quick reason here). This shorter format is helpful if you want to vote from a party, on the road, in a meeting, or on a boat.
Be as creative as you want with the reason.

A tweet that does not give a reason for the nomination will not be counted.

The nomination must be relevant to the category.

Vote for as many different people as you want, in as many categories as you want, as often as you want.

Only one person and one category per tweet.

Voting for the same person in the same category more than once just replaces the text of your original vote; it does not count as an additional vote.

You can vote in any of the Official Categories or make up a category of your own. If a new category becomes popular, it might be turned into an Official Category with an award presented at the ceremony in March.

Twitters are welcome to campaign and encourage their friends to vote for The Warford Foundation.

Voters must be active Twitter users prior to the start of the competition. Votes originating from new Twitter accounts or accounts used mainly for Shorty Awards voting will automatically be disqualified and will not count toward the rankings.

If you change your Twitter user name, any votes you received under your old user name won't carry over.

Nominations run through January 31, 2011.

Senate resolution brings recognition to Gold Star Wives

Senate resolution brings recognition to Gold Star Wives

Army News Service
2010-12-15

WASHINGTON (Dec. 7, 2010) -- For the first time, America officially recognizes the contributions and dedication of military widows with ''Gold Star Wives Day.''

A Senate resolution designates Dec. 18, 2010, as a day to honor and recognize the contributions of the members of the Gold Star Wives of America, Inc.

The group, with about 10,000 members, provides service, support and friendship to the widows and widowers of military personnel who died on active duty or as the result of a service-connected cause.

"This is the first year we've had a Gold Star Wives day. It's something that our government relations committee has been working on," said Kit Frazer, president, Gold Star Wives of America Inc. "It's national recognition for the organization, which is wonderful. It's something very special to us."

Frazer's husband was an Army helicopter pilot and was killed in Thailand during the Vietnam War. She said the organization represents military widows from every war since World War II.

Vivianne Wersel serves as the chairman of the Gold Star Wives government relations committee. Her husband, Marine Lt. Col. Rich Wersel, died Feb 4, 2005.

She said she hopes the observation brings awareness to the efforts of the Gold Star Wives.

"Part of it is public awareness, that the organization does exist and has existed since 1945, and the only time when we are really in the eye of the public is when we are on (Capitol Hill)," she said.

One of the issues Wersel said the Gold Star Wives would like to bring attention to is how widows receive benefits after the deaths of their husbands -- in particular, how dependency and indemnity compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs affects a survivor's payments from the Survivors Benefit Plan.

Wersel said some are confused by what the organization is working for when they ask that the rules governing benefits be changed. She said it helps to understand that a military wife often gives up a chance to earn her own retirement benefits when she agrees to move with their husband's military career.

"When you are a spouse and you have to move ten times to ten states in ten years you don't get your own retirement," she said. "Your retirement is a team retirement."

She said one of the things Gold Star Wives of America, Inc., works for is to bring attention to that issues, and she hopes the observation on Dec. 18 will bring attention to that effort.

Black Tie Etiquette for Ladies

Black Tie Etiquette for Ladies
By Beth Cone, eHow Contributor
updated: May 7, 2010

Formal events may specify a black-tie dress code on an invitation. Events such as charity balls, weddings, galas, college dances, or even proms may require black-tie attire. For men, a tuxedo fits the bill. For women, more choices abound. However, the traditional etiquette of black-tie attire for women does have certain parameters.

Dress Length
1. Per tradition, black-tie attire for women is a floor-length evening gown. For slightly less formal affairs such as a summer event or cocktail party, a shorter cocktail dress may be acceptable. Etiquette expert Emily Post recommends a formal gown or a shorter variation. In her book "New Manners for New Times," Letitia Baldrige suggests a "floor-length, short, or three-quarter-length evening gown."

Shoes and Purse
2. Black-tie rules for women also extend to one's choice of shoes and purse. Per traditional protocol, a woman's shoe choice should be an evening sandal or peau de soie pump. A woman should carry an evening bag in material such as peau de soie, satin, silk, velvet or brocade rather than a daytime purse.

Jewelry
3. A woman's jewelry choices should also reflect the formality of a black-tie affair. Diamonds or pearls are an acceptable choice. A simple or chandelier earring, a more formal bracelet or necklace is also appropriate.

Considerations
4. Depending on the formality of the occasion, a woman's wardrobe choices may vary. During summer months or for a black-tie evening on a cruise, either a long gown or a shorter, formal cocktail dress may be acceptable. One's accessories should remain formal, in keeping with the formality of the occasion.

Black Tie Optional
5. When an invitation dictates "black tie optional," a woman's choices may include formal separates as well as an evening gown or cocktail dress. Formal separates may include a dinner suit or full-length evening skirt with a dressy blouse.

Creative Black Tie
6. When an invitation calls for "creative black tie," a woman may wear either a full-length gown, shorter cocktail dress or separates. When accessorizing, she may add a dramatic piece such as a colorful shawl or jewelry.

Gloves
7. The protocol for traditional black-tie attire for women may include over-the-elbow white or black satin gloves. Per etiquette rules, a woman should remove her right glove before entering a receiving line so she may shake hands
